Mumbai: The Malabar Hill police, which is investigating the death of 18-year-old Manmat Mhaiskar who allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 20th floor terrace of Dariya Mahal building in South Mumbai on Tuesday, is contacting all the persons Manmat had called up from his phone before taking the drastic step.

The police has recovered his mobile phone that was partially-damaged in the fall. The police is also checking the contents of his bag that was recovered from Dariya Mahal. Manmat was the son of senior IAS officers Milind Mhaiskar and Manisha Mhaiskar.

Though officials are still ascertaining the motive behind the act, they insist it was a case of suicide and that no foul play seems to be involved. Officials are talking to Manmat’s friends to find out the reason behind his suicide

Manmat suffered severe head injury when he jumped off from Dariya Mahal and was declared dead on arrival at the state-run JJ Hospital. The Malabar Hill police has registered an accidental death report and is probing the case. According to the police, they have not recovered a suicide note and are probing the case from all angles.

A police source said, “The police is inquiring his friends if Manmat was going through any mental tension. The police has not yet spoken to his parents as they are in trauma. Manmat, who was doing his law in a Pune-based college, didn’t spend time with his friends on Sunday when he came here as he usually used to do. Police officials believe it is a suicide and are calling on numbers on Manmat’s last-dialled list. They are also trying to retrieve messages from his phone. Till now the police investigation has found this was a planned suicide. They are trying to find out what problem he was suffering from.”

According to police officials, Manmat had completed his Class 12 from St. Xavier’s College. He had come to Mumbai on Sunday. On Tuesday, he said he was going to his friend’s place in Dariya Mahal, but did not meet him and jumped off the building instead.
