Mumbai: Two 9 and 11 year-old children drowned in an open drain in Rafiq Nagar on Thursday morning while playing. The two were washed out of the drain and rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. The Shivaji Nagar police have registered an accidental death report.

The parents of both the children had launched a manhunt for them and kidnapping cases were registered with Shivaji Nagar police station. The deceased were identified as Mohamed Kaif, 13, and Sayyad Ali, 9, both residents of Lotus Colony. The police said that the two were last seen on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, Kaif's body was found floating in the drain. After the same was reported to the police, the officials launched a search for the other boy and found Ali's body 500 meters away.

“The sequence of incidents are not clear yet. We suspect that one of the boys fell and the other landed inside as well while trying to save the first one. We are investigating the case,” said an officer of Shivaji Nagar police station. The investigators are looking for eye-witnesses who can throw further clarity on the incident.
