6 booked for killing BJP councillor

Mumbai: Six brothers were booked for allegedly killing a BJP councilor in Ambejogai in Maharashtra’s Beed district, the police said Saturday. Councilor Vijay Shesherao Jogdand (34) was killed Friday night when he intervened in a dispute between the accused and their younger brother Nitin.

The incident occurred Friday night, when Nitin was boozing at a nearby place and was spotted by his six brothers who attacked him with swords or guptis owing to some previous enmity. When someone saw this and reported to his brother, councilor Vijay Jogdand, that Nitin was being injured, Vijay rushed to the spot to solve the matter but before he could reach, Nitin absconded and Vijay fell into the hands of the accused, decapitated him.

Additional superintendent of police Ajit Borhade said that Nitin, Vijay and all six accused were distant cousins. Vijay’s younger brother, Nitin, allegedly had an affair with the mother of the accused. Borhade said, “Two years ago, Nitin was staying with Bhagwan Jogdand’s wife in Lal Nagar, a place near Ambejogai for two years.”

“Later, Bhagwan’s family convinced his wife to reconcile with him and stay in her matrimonial house and put an end to her illicit relation with her nephew Nitin.”

When councilor Vijay intervened, he was attacked with a sword. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Superintendent of police (SP) G. Shreedhar told The Asian Age, “Two of the six siblings have been arrested and efforts are on to nab the rest. We have recovered one sword and gupti (sharp weapon). A few more swords that were used in the murder are to be recovered. The probe is underway.”
