BMC workers with kid with needs can take childcare leave

While women employees who have a kid with special needs can avail this leave, widowed male employees can also seek its benefits.

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employees, who have a disabled child can now take paid child care leave (CCL) of two years (730 days) on the lines of state government staff.

While women employees who have a kid with special needs can avail this leave, widowed male employees can also seek its benefits. According to civic officials, municipal employees can avail several long-term leaves for factors like study, sick, maternity, child adoption, special disabled etc. However, a provision of CCL was not made applicable to them yet.

The municipal general administration department has made a proposal and submitted before the civic standing committee for its approval.

“As per the conditions of this scheme, maximum 730 days can be availed in the entire service of up to 22 years of a disabled child. Age restriction for CCL is not applicable in case of disabled children with 40 per cent disability. It is admissible only for the eldest two children,” said a senior civic official.

Those who have kids with disabilities like visual impairment, hearing impairment, locomotor impairment; cerebral palsy, mental retardation, learning disabilities and mental illness can also avail benefits of CCL.
