Mumbai: Woman jumps out of train, dies

Mumbai: A 65-year-old woman died on Tuesday night after she allegedly jumped out of a suburban train, on noticing that a fire had broken out in its luggage coach, near platform six of the Ghatkopar railway station.

The woman, Laxmi Swami, resided at Kurla and had boarded the CST-bound train from Badlapur, officials said, adding that her body was found on the tracks on Wednesday morning.

The fire was triggered by kerosene that was being carried in the luggage coach, railway police found in its preliminary probe. The police is yet to identify the person who had kept the combustible substance whose transportation via trains is banned.

Recounting the sequence of incidents, the railway police said that fire was spotted in the fast train soon after it left from the Ghatkopar station. Some of the passengers, including Swami, allegedly jumped from the coach after spotting fire.

While the Government Railway Police (GRP) stated that no passengers had jumped from the train, Swami was found dead on the railway tracks. “Considering the head injuries sustained by the deceased, it is suspected that she was hit by a mail train that was coming from adjacent tracks soon after she jumped. We are still in the process of getting the details of what happened,” said a GRP officer.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) meanwhile said that the person who was allegedly carrying kerosene is yet to be identified and that none of the persons travelling in the luggage coach was known yet.
