Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will soon discuss the controversial Nanar green refinery with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, even though Mr Fadnavis is firm about the project and has made it clear that the government needs a coastal site for it. The Sena may withdraw its stand on the Nanar issue if residents compromise and the government declares a good compensation package, said a senior Sena minister.

Mr Fadnavis on Monday told mediapersons that he had already cleared the government’s view in detail in the legislature, and that the committee of NIRI, IIT and Gokhale Institute had been asked to study environmental and social impact issues, which had been studied earlier as well.

With the Sena and residents of 16 villages aggressively opposing the project, Mr Fadnavis will discuss the issue with Mr Thackeray with a view to finding a solution. Mr Fadnavis said that the Union petroleum minister had asked for an appointment with Mr Thackeray a few days ago but was denied the same.

When asked whether the government will cancel or stay the notification of land acquisition, Mr Fadnavis said that the project will go ahead.

Asked whether a change in site was possible, Mr Fadnavis said that a coastal site was needed and that there was no alternative site.
