Two killed as luxury bus rams into SUV in Vasai

Mumbai: A luxury bus and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) rammed into each other at a U-turn in Vasai on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad inter-state highway on Thursday morning, killing two persons and injuring one. According to the police, the accident occurred at Maljipada when the speeding bus lost control at the U-turn and collided with the SUV, whose three occupants were on their way to deliver milk cans to a dairy in Vasai city.

The dead included two of the SUV’s occupants, Manoj Kumar Kishori Harijan (30) and Mohammad Mustafa Muslim Shaikh (45), while its driver Ram Tejpal Pal sustained minor head injuries. The driver of the luxury bus fled the spot leaving behind the bus and its passengers.

(Rural)’s Valiv police has booked the bus driver, who is yet to be identified, for negligent driving. The bus was enroute to Borivali from Gujarat.

According to police officials attached to the Valiv police station, the collision of the luxury bus and the SUV Mahindra Bolero took place at 4.45 am on Thursday morning. The SUV, which being driven by survivor Ram Tejpal Pal, who was accompanied by Harijan, one of the two persons killed in the accident.

While the SUV was on its way to Vasai city, the luxury bus was on its way from Gujarat to Mumbai. The bus, registered with number GJ-05-AV-4200, rammed into the SUV on the U-turn near S.B. Dhaba at Majlipada in Vasai.

Speaking to The Asian Age, police inspector Aanda Chaure, the investigating officer of this case said, “The Valiv police has booked the absconding driver of the luxury bus under section 279 of IPC for negligent driving. The two bodies were sent for post-mortem in a local hospital at Bhiwandi while the injured was admitted in the same hospital.”

Thane (Rural)’s Valiv police has initiated a search operation for the absconding luxury bus driver and alerted all the police stations in Mumbai.

All the three occupants of the SUV car — Harijan, Shaikh and Pal were residents of a local village in Vasai. As soon as the accident took place, officials of the police station located about five kilometers away, reached the spot and transferred the case to the Thane (Rural)’s Valiv police station.
