Mumbai: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) will soon draft a policy for installing electricity equipments near rivers.

“A policy will be drafted in near future to not only help avoid power cut during natural calamities but also help create a strong power system to serve people better,” said officers from the MSEDCL.

The move comes amid the devastating floods that hit Western Maharashtra, leading to the collapse of electricity supply system at many places as floodwater submerged transporters and substations.

“The state government government-run PSU  has decided to install high towers near rivers to avoid inconvenience during floods.

At present, only Maharashtra State Electricity Transm-ission Company Limited (MAHATRANSCO) has installed high towers. MSEDCL will also install such towers soon,” said Sanjeev Kumar, Chief Managing Director , MSEDCL.

The officer said that it may take two to three years to install these towers at required places, adding that a study will be conducted to fix the total number of such towers that are required.

Chief minister Devendra Fadanvis has also set a committee to study flood line, climate change and other related issues.

Kolhapur and Sangli districts have been  badly affected by unprecedented floods.

Meanwhile, people from different walks of life and institutions have donated Rs 20 crore in just two days in the chief minister’s relief fund.
