Translator deposes in Abu Jundal case

Mumbai: A special sessions court on Tuesday recorded the statement of an official translator who had translated details of the Pakistani passport seized from Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal, in the 26/11 terror case.

Mohammed Amin Nadvi is the first witness to be examined after accused-turned approver Pakistani-American terrorist David Headley.

Nadvi appeared as the second witness in the case on Tuesday and confirmed before the court what he had translated from the passport seized from Jundal after his arrest. The Pakistani passport seized from Jundal had details like his name, address, age and other particulars written in Urdu. It also had a visa stamp in Arabic.

According to the prosecution, the passport bore the name Riyasat Ali Khushi Mohammad and bore Jundal’s photograph on it. As the passport, which was issued by the Pakistan government had details in Urdu, Indian security agencies sought the help of the translator. The translator was called as witness in the court to prove this.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam examined Nadvi on Tuesday and special judge G.A. Sanap adjourned the matter for Nadvi’s cross-examination by Jundal’s lawyer.

Jundal was arrested on June 21, 2012 in India after the UAE government deported him. Apart from his passport, a national identity card was also seized from him and these documents are important to prove his identity in the court of law.
