Civic body has proposed to make installation of openable window grills mandatory.
Mumbai: The high-rise buildings and skyscrapers may have to install openable window grills in their apartments. Taking into account various difficulties faced by firemen during their fire fighting operations, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to make it mandatory on developers to install openable window grills in the apartments.
Shiv Sena corporator Arundhati Dudhwadkar had tabled a notice of motion, in which she had demanded that it should be made mandatory for developers to install openable window grills, which can be opened easily during emergency. The proposal was passed in the civic house recently.
Ms Dudhwadkar said that, in high-rise buildings and skyscrapers, the apartments have large windows for better ventilation, which are often closed by iron grills. But in case of fire or other calamities, these grills cause difficulties to firemen to carry out fire fighting operations, she added.
“It takes firemen a lot of time to break these window grills and carry out rescue operations. The delay sometimes results in loss of lives and monetary damage. If openable window grills are insta-lled, it will enable firemen to carry out rescue operations conveniently,” Ms Dudhwadkar said.
In some of the recent fire incidents, it has been observed that firemen face problems to enter the apartments due to closed window grills. This has resulted difficulties in their firefighting operations.
“The proposal has now been sent for approval of the municipal commissioner. If approved, the condition for closed window grills will be included in the fire prevention measures and building permission rules,” said an official.
