Mumbai: A sessions court on Thursday granted bail to three persons including, AIMIM corporator Shahnawaz Hussain, in Cheeta Camp riots case. These three are first among the 29 accused to get bail in the case. The contention of the defence was that so far nothing has come on record to show involvement of these accused in the riots. The defence also argued that keeping them behind bars would not serve any purpose.

Defence lawyer Ratnakar Dawre said that sessions judge V P Avhad granted bail to Shahnawaz Hussain, Raja Edinboro and Mohammed Imran on personal bond of Rs 25000 each.

According to Mr Dawre they had contended before the court that sections of attempt to murder and rioting are not applicable on the accused. Advocate Abad Ponda had argued before the court that though the name of accused had appeared in the FIR, they had no role in the riots. Also, none of the witnesses have said anything about these applicants to prove their in involvement in rioting. Advocate Ponda argued that the applicants had gone to the police station to register FIR against the person who had posted objectionable morphed picture of Mecca on social media website and had left that place after registration of complaint.

Case history

Arvind Arundudhiyar, a teenage contractual sweeper with the Navi Mumbai civic body and a Trombay resident had allegedly posted a controversial image on social media. Later, 17 persons including local AIMIM municipal corporator Shahnawaz Shaikh were arrested.
