Mumbai: Municipal services in Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar are likely to be affected on Wednesday as municipal unions have strongly opposed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plan to implement ‘turn-key contract,’ under which the works of lifting of garbage and its transportation to the dump sites have been allotted to private agencies.

The turn-key contract is all-inclusive, which includes works like lifting of garbage, its transportation to dump sites with the help of compactor vehicles, providing dustbins to the housing societies, eradication of dustbins on roads etc. From Wednesday, it will be implemented in administrative zone-7, which include wards like R-south, R-Central and R-North wards.

However, municipal unions have opposed the move saying they will carry out ‘stop-work agitation’ in Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar on Wednesday. If the issue is not resolved, the agitation will be held in all 24 wards, they have threatened.

“As all conservancy works will be carried out by contractors, hundreds of contractual workers who have been doing the works honestly for years will be rendered jobless,” said Sanjay Wagh, secretary of Municipal Karmachari Kamgar Sena.

According to civic officials, some of the municipal unions had opposed the move to offer all-inclusive ‘turn-key’ contract in three wards. The issue was also taken to the industrial court. However, the BMC assured that there would be no curtailment in the rights of concerned municipal workers. It also said that the municipal workers will be offered work according to their duty-list. Following this, the industrial court had dismissed the case.

“The jobs of municipal workers in all three wards will be intact after the implementation of turn-key contract and they have been given the same kind of work. Despite this, if any workers try to disturb the regular municipal services, action will be taken against them as per the municipal rules,” said deputy municipal commissioner Vishwas Shankarwar.
