Mumbai: A senior citizen was found murdered in his flat in Kandivali (west) on Saturday evening. The deceased Devendra Jayantilal Doshi (65) was alone in the house when the unidentified assailant is suspected to have entered the residence, overpowered him and gagged his mouth with a piece of cloth before cutting his throat with a knife. The deceased’s right eye and head were found to be severely injured as well, according to the police.

The personal belongings of Doshi, who had separated from his wife, were found to be intact, due to which the police has ruled out robbery as the unidentified assailant’s motive, said a police investigator. The police is verifying if the murder was linked to the assailant’s enmity with the deceased.

The deceased’s son, Nirav Devendra Doshi (37), lodged a First Information Report at Kandivali police station on Saturday evening after recovering his father’s body. The deceased, Devendra, separated from his wife Chandra Doshi in 2002, and lived alone in the flat on the fourth floor of Pratik Building. His two sons, Nirav and Hitesh, lived in Mira Road, but were in constant touch.

Devendra had frequent visits from his family and friends, but had not been answering any calls since Saturday morning. One of his relatives then called up Doshi’s neighbour to check on him, but the door bell went unanswered. The neighbours then contacted the police at 9.30 pm on Saturday, and they found Doshi lying dead in a pool of blood. After that, Nirav immediately registered a complaint with the Kandivali police.

Crime Branch unit 11 is also investigating the matter and its officials have found a small penknife at the murder scene during the panchnama. The police are suspecting that the deceased was brutally hurled against a wall, resulting in his right eye popping out of its socket.

When the police started the investigation, it was revealed that the cause of the murder was not robbery as no stolen items were reported.

The police have been detaining people from the building and questioning them. Officers have also got hold of the CCTV footage of the building and are suspecting some sort of enmity to be the cause of the murder.
