Mumbai: The Mumbai crime branch raided two bars in the intervening night between Saturday and Sunday on the occasion of Gatari (day before the Hindu month of Shravan begins), and took into custody more than 36 customers and dancers.

The raids were carried out at the Indiana and Drum Beat bars, which have been raided in the past as well. As many as 17 girls, who were allegedly dancing obscenely, were taken into custody.

A case has been registered against the manager and other staff as per provisions of the Protection of Dignity of Women Act and Prohibition of Obscene Dance Act. Further action is underway, said the police.

The bars were simultaneously raided after the police received a tip-off about rules being violated and patrons showering money on the dancers.

An officer said, “The customers were violating norms and showering currency notes while the girls were dancing in an obscene manner.”

After a police decoy confirmed that rules were being violated, the police immediately raided the bars and took the customers and dancers into custody.
