Decade on, no end in sight for project
According to civic officials they have not received any single penny from the Centre despite having received several assurances.
Mumbai: In spite of more than a decade having elapsed, the Brihanmumbai storm water disposal system (BRIMSTOWAD) project is still incomplete. Though the works of phase 1 have been completed, nearly half of phase 2, which consists of 38 works, is yet to be completed. In the past nine years, 18 of 20 works under phase 1 undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been completed while two are in progress.
Around 5,000 to 6,000 people are expected to be affected due to BRIMSTOWAD project work but the civic body is yet to verify their eligibility and their rehabilitation is still pending.
The cost of the project, which was supposed to be completed by 2015, has zoomed to Rs 4,000 crore from its original estimate of Rs 1,200 crore in the past 9 years.
According to civic officials they have not received any single penny from the Centre despite having received several assurances. According to a top civic official, the BMC requires an additional Rs 2,800 crore to complete this project due to several reasons. For this, the civic body has sent a revised report to the Centre. However, there has been no response as of now.
