Maharashtra not to levy hefty fines under MVA yet

The state government is likely to take a decision on the matter after receiving a reply from the Centre.

Mumbai: State transport minister Diwakar Raote on Wednesday announced that the Maharashtra government has not yet implemented the amended Motor Vehicles Act under which errant drivers will be compelled to shell out steep penalties.

Mr Raote said he had written a letter to Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari, asking him to reconsider levying hefty fines for traffic violations.

The state government is likely to take a decision on the matter after receiving a reply from the Centre.

The transport minister said there was no change to the status quo until further notice. “If someone has been charged as per the new rules, he can file a case in court,” he said.
