Mumbai: Matunga residents are miffed over the frequent incidents of haphazard dumping of construction debris in surrounding areas. They have demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and police authorities take strict action against those involved in such illegal activities.
Local residents have alleged that developers’ men have been dumping debris from nearby construction sites on roads and open spaces in Matunga at regular intervals. This is done at night so as to escape the notice of the police and civic authorities.
Matunga resident and civic activist Nikhil Desai from AGNI said, “You wake up in the morning and suddenly you find construction debris is being discarded in your area. This is very disturbing. Specific locations like Singhania Road, Deodhar Road junction and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg are being targetted.”He also called for the installation of CCTV cameras by BMC.
Officials of solid waste management from F-North ward have registered several complaints with the Matunga police station about this. “Developers’ workers dump debris along the roads especially during the night time to escape the eye of authorities. After receiving people’s complaints we have to lift the debris on our own,” an official said.
Balasaheb Kakad, senior police inspector of Matunga police station said, “We have intensified patrolling during the night. If we come across any such incident, we will take strict action against the culprits.”
Keshav Ubale, assistant commissioner of F-North ward told The Asian Age. “I will definitely look into the matter.”
