Mumbai: Residents of undeclared slums on private lands will finally get water supply from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body’s decision to offer water connections to them will benefit large slums like Ganpat Patil Nagar in Dahisar.

As per the directives of Bombay high court, the BMC has decided to supply water to illegal slums, which have come up in the city after January 1, 2000, at higher rates. However, the undeclared slums on private lands were not included in the scheme.

The Ganpat Patil Nagar consists of 8,000 slums, where more than 32,000 people live. According to civic officials, there are more than 50,000 people staying in undeclared slums on private lands. They are deprived of water supply due to BMC's decision not supplying water to them.

Local corporator Tejas-wini Ghosalkar from Shiv Sena had demanded that BMC should supply water to people living on private land. “The slum dwellers at Ganpat Patil Nagar are forced to buy water from tankers at higher rates. While BMC supplies water at `3-4 for every 1000 litres, they have to pay `1 per every litre,” she said.

In a recent meeting held in civic headquarters, it was decided that BMC would supply to slums on private land too.

Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has directed the civic officials to supply water to these slums provided that the land-owners allow them to do so. Accordingly, Ms Ghosa-lkar has tabled a proposal before the civic standing committee for supplying water to slums on private land. “After being cleared by the standing committee, it will be tabled in the civic general body meeting for final approval,” said a civic official.
