MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for Navi Mumbai International Airport on February 18, which will be functional from 2019. The ceremony will take place at Ulwe village where the work of the airport has started.

The Navi Mumbai airport would help to ease traffic congestion at Mumbai International airport. However, the Greenfield airport met lots of controversies related to environment. The Modi government has given almost all the permissions for the Navi Mumbai airport and the GVK led-Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has been awarded the work contract. MIAL is a joint venture between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the GVK-led consortium.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the airport on February 18. He will be in town to inaugurate Magnetic Maharashtra summit at BKC. It will be a small function but will boost the ongoing work of the airport,” an official from Mantralaya said.

The Greenfield Airport has been planned on an area of 1,600 hectares in Navi Mumbai for which the City and Industrial Development Corpo-ration (Cidco) is the nodal agency. The Navi Mumbai international airport, the second airport in the city, will be built near Panvel. The project, worth `16,000 crore, has been mired in environment related controversies due to which it has been delayed.
