Mumbai: In the wake of partial collapse of Kothari Mansion in Fort, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked residents of two adjoining buildings – Malhotra House and Patel Mansion – to vacate their homes immediately.

The civic body has also warned residents not to occupy these buildings till structural engineers declare them fit for human habitation.

In a letter issued to residents of both the buildings, the BMC has said, “You are directed to carry out the structural audit of your building through registered structural engineer. You are also directed to vacate the buildings and not to occupy them till necessary measures are taken as per structural engineer’s suggestions and the declaration is given by them about buildings to be fit for human habitation. The BMC will not be responsible for any loss of human life, adjoining property, passer-by etc if any untoward incident/mishap take place at these buildings.”

On Saturday, a fire had broke out at Kothari Mansion, which is a grade II heritage structure. While carrying out relief operations, two firemen were injured as east portion of the building had collapsed.

“The rest of Kothari Mansion building is severely endangered and it may collapse at any time. Hence we have directed residents of adjoining buildings to vacate their homes and carry out structural audit,” said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner, A ward.

The letters issued by the BMC are marked on the names of Laser Shaving Product Pvt Ltd, the owner of Malhotra House, and Yusuf Ismail Umretiya of Patel Mansion and tenants of both the buildings.

The BMC has also asked police to keep a vigil on the premises and not to allow tenants to enter these buildings.

“This is to ensure no untoward incident or mishap happens,” said a senior civic official.
