MUMBAI: After a video of a couple getting intimate in a state of undress in full public view at Marine Drive went viral on Friday, the police has approached the Foreigners Regional Registration Office to figure out the identity of the man, a foreigner who is yet to be traced.

The police is also inquiring with neighbouring hotels to track him down. The police, after questioning the woman — who was later sent to the Mahila Suraksha Kendra in Chembur, said she was mentally unstable as her statements contradicted each other.

According to the police, the couple grabbed eyeballs on Thursday evening as they were standing on a road divider at Nariman Point in south Mumbai’s posh Marine Drive area, and the matter was brought to the notice of the police control room which rushed a mobile van from the Marine Drive police station to the spot. When the police tried to intervene, the man managed to escape, while the woman was taken into the custody for questioning. A source said that the woman first said that she was from Goa, and after that kept changing her statements claiming that she is from Russia and Geneva, whereas she looks like an Indian. When questioned about the objectionable act in which she and the man were engaged, she said that they were ‘just kissing’.

Vilas Gangawane, senior police inspector of Marine Drive police station, said, “From the details obtained from the woman, her partner is a Russian national. However, looking at her disoriented mental state, we are not only checking for Russian nationals but all foreign nationals who could have been seen with her over the last week. The police has also scoured through CCTV footage of the vicinity, and asked around in hotels where foreign nationals usually stay, to acquire more details about the woman’s partner.”
