Mumbai: Nearly five months after the examinations were conducted in December 2017, the Mumbai University (MU) is yet to assess more than 1,000 answer papers of Masters of Commerce (MCom) students. On their part, MU officials have claimed that as MCom is a post-graduate (PG) course, there are fewer teachers.

A MU official said, “The number of papers that is pending for assessment and evaluation is very less but one major reason for the delay is less number of teachers. Though the online assessment system is working perfectly, if the number of teachers available for assessment is less, the process will eventually slow down.”

While the evaluation of semester one of the MCom course has been completed, officials claimed that the results would be declared in a couple of days. While nearly 1,000 answer papers of semester III of MCom. are pending assessment, which will take another five to six days.

Students are a worried lot as it has been five months since the exams. Sakshi Chitre, a student, said, “Nobody is concerned about what we are going through since the past five months. They have delayed it so much when the results should have been out in February itself.”

Another student, Rahul Jain, questioned, “The university is breaking its own rules year after year since the time they have started the online assessment system. My question is why have they taken up any new system when they are not ready to implement it properly?”

There are about 40,000 to 42,000 MCom students awaiting their results. Apart from MCom, results of another 10 courses are yet to be declared. Although the MU will not give a deadline, it has assured that results will be declared by next week.

Last year’s fiasco

The results of examinations conducted in April-May last year were declared after five months. For these examinations, the MU used the newly introduced on-screen marking system for the first time. Frequent technical problems, lack of coordination between teachers and MU officials were the main causes of the delay. The final-year students faced a tough battle due to this situation.
