Mumbai: On the third and last day of their strike, the Maharashtra State Government Employees’ Union withdrew the protest after the government requested them to call off the strike in the backdrop of the Maharashtra Bandh called on Thursday for Maratha reservation.

The union members resumed work after the strike’s withdrawal. Since Tuesday almost 17 lakh state government employees — of third and fourth grade as well as teachers, hospital nurses — were on strike with various demands.

These demands included implementation of seventh pay commission, five-day work week, dearness allowances, recruitment on 1.85 lakh vacant posts in state government’s various departments and so on. The state government has announced clearance of dearness allowance.

On Thursday morning, union leaders withdrew their strike after talks with the government.  “We have decided to withdraw the strike in the wake of bandh as well as our talks with government are satisfactory. The state government have issued two government resolutions,” said Avinash Daund, union leader of state government employees.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday during the state cabinet meeting Shiv Sena leader and transport minister Diwakar Raote had demanded action against the employees. But education minister Vinod Tawde opposed the idea.
