Eateries unprepared for fire to be sealed by BMC
On Tuesday, the E ward officials sealed Azmi Café Service at Byculla for not having a food licence.
Mumbai: Taking a lesson from the fire at the Kamala Mills compound, the Brihan-mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will seal establishments if they are found imminently dangerous in terms of possible fire outbreaks. The civic body has got cracking on all eateries, resto-bars and hookah parlours to have them comply with fire safety norms.
“Action has been started against restaurants, basements and other places, which are in imminent danger of catching fire. We have directed the chief fire officer to seal the establishment immediately if he feels that the place is dangerous for fire accidents. The CFO can direct people to vacate the place, summon the police officer and ask him to seal the premises till the time it is made safe from the fire point of view,” said municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta.
According to civic officials, the action will be taken under section 8(1) of Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act 2006. “We have asked fire officials to move around with ward officials and visit all establishments to check whether they are safe from fires. Demolitions will also be carried out during the drive,” said a senior civic official.

On Monday, the BMC had sealed 10th street café in Juhu for running without a food licence.
