Mumbai: To get a location-specific forecast for Mumbai, a special model will be initiated in the city. The earth sciences department has constituted a special committee for the purpose. For better understanding of the monsoon and city weather, four new radars will be set up in the Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai regions.

The ministry of earth and sciences has decided to set up a location-specific model for India that will be initiated from Mumbai city, where about 1 crore people live and the daily floating population is 40 lakh. “Mumbai city has a different weather condition.

Some parts of the city experience very high temperatures. In the rainy season, some parts experience very high rainfall. Looking at the needs of the city, the ministry is planning to set up location-specific forecast,” said K. S. Hosalikar, deputy director general, Meteorology Department, Mumbai region.

Further, four new high-quality and upgraded versions of Doppler radars will be installed in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai city. In Mumbai, two new radars will be installed. According to Mr Hosalikar, one radar will be installed at Ghatkopar or BKC, for which the Indian Meteorological Department will take help from the disaster department of the BMC.
