Illicit liquor cases top MCC violations

Mumbai: Illicit liquor cases top the list of model code of conduct (MCC) violations for the upcoming Lok Sabha (LS) polls.

More than 90 per cent of complaints received for the violations is related to the liquor stocks that were being transported without a licence.

According to the data, the Election Commission (EC) has registered 8,598 first information reports (FIRs) since March 11 in connection with the violation of the MCC, which is in force for the LS polls.

Of the 8598 complaints, as many as 8,068, which amounts to whopping 93 per cent, are connected to the stock and distribution of illicit liquor, while others are related to defacement of public property like illegal banners, loudspeakers (41), weapons (384), narcotics (75), distribution of cash (29) and gold and valuable metals (1).

“These cases have been filed by the EC flying squads and also the excise department across the state,” said the official from the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).

In addition to this, the EC has also seized goods worth Rs 88.41 crore. They include cash (Rs 29.62 crore), liquor (Rs 15.51 crore), gold (Rs 39 crore) and drugs and narcotics (Rs 4.24 crore).

“Many of the complaints have been filed through our portal, and others by the candidates and their supporters. The FIRs have been registered and further action will be taken by the police as per the requirement,” a senior official from the CEO.
