Mumbai: A dead cockroach was spotted in an ice cream tub at Imax Wadala Thursday night. A customer who had gone to buy ice cream during the interval was shocked to see the dead cockroach in a tub at the sales counter.

Sanjay Singh, a supervisor with a private company, said that he noticed the dead cockroach inside the tub while placing an order for ice cream. After seeing the salesperson’s apathy when questioned, Mr Singh complained to the FDA.

Mr Singh said, “First of all, I was shocked to see the dead cockroach in the ice cream. Then when I brought it to the notice of the salesperson, he removed the insect with the help of a hard cardboard.” Mr Singh said that the salesperson neither washed his hands nor wore gloves while removing the cockroach from the ice cream tub.

“When I asked him to discard that particular ice cream, he removed the ice cream tub from the table and put it in the refrigerator. I made the video and clicked the snaps and uploaded them on social media. I have written to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” he said.

When asked about the matter, joint commissioner of FDA, Amrut Nikhanje said, “I have seen the video and will be registering a case and we have also initiated an inquiry into the ice cream stall at the theatre.”

According to experts, cockroaches do not cause diseases by themselves but do spread germs and bacteria through cross-contamination.
