Civic corporation restores 62 schools, reconstructs four

Mumbai: As many as 66 municipal schools got a makeover during the year 2017-18. The BMC carried out restoration of 62 schools, while four schools were reconstructed. The schools were also given a distinct identity with yellow and brown colours.

According to civic officials, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation spent Rs 72.44 crore on the reconstruction of four schools i.e. Parel Bhoiwada municipal school (RS 10.55 crore) in the F-south ward; MHB Gate Number 7 municipal school (Rs 26.46 crore) and MHB Gate Number 8 municipal school (Rs 12.32 crore) in the P-north ward; and Shivaji Nagar Number 3 Chikhalwadi municipal school (Rs 23.11 crore) in the M-east ward.

The BMC also spent Rs 96.23 crore on repair works of 62 municipal schools during the year 2017-18. Of the schools restored by the civic body, seven were from Chembur (M-west ward) and six from the M-east ward (Govandi-Mankhurd).

Additional municipal commissioner Abasaheb Jarhad said, “There are more than three lakh students in BMC schools. In the reconstruction and restoration of these schools, provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act have also been implemented to ensure that students are provided several facilities. They include separate toilets for boys and girls, a separate toilet and ramp for physically-challenged students, one latrine for every 40 students, additional rooms etc.”
