Mumbai: Heirs of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement’s martyrs may get accommodation from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Under the Development Plan (DP) 2034, the civic body can consider providing accommodation to them under the affordable housing scheme, said civic officials.

The BMC has made several reservations for affordable housing in the DP 2034. “The relatives of martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement can be considered for accommodation as per DP provisions,” said a senior civic official.

Corporators had demanded that heirs of 106 martyrs, who had sacrificed their lives in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, should be provided jobs and accommodation by the BMC. Former Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator Sudhir Jadhav has made this demand in the year 2016 through a notice of motion.

However, the BMC administration made it clear that while the relatives cannot be given municipal jobs, they can be provided accommodation. DP department officials have said that providing accommodation to martyrs’ kin will be possible under the BMC’s policy. “In the revised DP, the BMC has kept several plots reserved for affordable housing. After the development of the proposed reservations, the allotment of these affordable houses can be done as per the DCR provisions. Under the municipal policy, the BMC can consider providing houses to the kin of 106 martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement,” said an official.
