Police on lookout for two involved in base jumping

Mumbai: Four days after a woman was spotted base jumping near Palm Beach Road in Navi Mumbai, leading to panic among the locals, the police ruled out any foul play in the incident. The police said that a man accompanied the woman, both stated to be foreigners, and they are now on the lookout for the duo with the help of CCTV grabs. Base jumping refers to parachuting or wing suit flying from a fixed structure or cliff.

The identities of the duo are yet to be ascertained however the officials said that they seemed to be foreigners, as per details shared by the police. The same was later verified with the CCTV camera footage in which they were captured.

“The incident doesn’t seem to be suspicious as we found that they had been moving around in the area since 3pm the same day. The activity of jumping from a height with parachutes is called base jumping and we are still trying to locate them,” said Sudhakar Pathare, deputy commissioner of police, (zone one), Navi Mumbai.

The police said that after the locals informed the police about the incident citing it to be suspicious, they began scanning the CCTV footage. The initial footage was unclear and their faces were not visible in it, the police said.

However, after the footage from other cameras in the neighbourhood was scanned, the police found that the couple had been sightseeing and loitering throughout the day in Ghansoli and the neighbouring stretch.

The police said that since the locals spotted them base jumping at 8.30 pm and the duo did not pay any heed to their warnings, the locals panicked.

The police said that they were on the lookout for the duo and their verification was of primary importance. Teams of Navi Mumbai police have been formed to track them down. The investigators said that a case would be filed only if developers of the under-construction tower approached them with any complaint.
