Pune: In a suspected honour killing, a 23-year-old youth was hacked to death on Sunday due to his one-and-a-half year old affair with a 15-year-old girl from another caste. According to the police, the youth was allegedly killed by the girl’s brothers. The deceased’s father has lodged a FIR but police is yet to arrest the accused as they are on the run. The police said it had witnesses who had seen the girl’s brothers killing the boy.

The deceased Avinash Akhade was the only son of his parents. His brother had passed away last year due to illness. According to Avinash’s father, Nilu Akhade, the girl’s brothers murdered his son. He has lodged a FIR with Sinhgad police station, Pune.

According to Devendra Shinde, sub-inspector, Sinhgad police station, “Avinash and the accused Akash Kambale (name changed to protect identity) and his cousin are residents of Sanawwadi near Raikar Mala, Pune. They have been friends since childhood. Avinash belongs to a so-called lower caste while the accused is from a so-called upper caste.”

“Avinash, who was working as a plumber, was in love with Akash’s 15-year-old sister for the past two years. Akash and his family had  bwarned Avinash to stay away from the girl several times. However, Avinash did not sever ties with the girl and continued to meet her whenever possible. This angered Akash,” said Shinde.

He further said, “Akash and his cousin and their associates had been following Avinash for long. On Sunday however, they were able to meet him alone at a deserted place. A short-cut to their house goes alongside the hill and a deserted farm. Avinash was headed home via this route when the accused caught him and hit him with a sharp weapon multiple times, leaving him to die. The post-mortem report has confirmed death due to being attacked with a sharp weapon.”

Someone informed Avinash’s family and the police and the former was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Shinde said, “We have lodged a FIR under Indian Penal Code 302 for murder and 34 for committing crime with common intention. We have witnesses saying that they saw the accused brothers killing Avinash. But all accused ran away after committing the act as they got to know that a police complaint had been lodged. We are searching for them.”
