Mumbai: The Bombay high court has directed the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakhs to a student who had failed to get admission in a private medical college despite have good marks in the entrance test. The court held that despite a government-constituted committee finding the allegations of the student to be accurate, it had done nothing to help the student to secure admission in a medical college and hence it is liable to pay Rs 20 lakh.

The writ petition filed by Firdos Ansari in 2013 stated that the college should be directed to admit her considering her merit over the other students who have scored lower marks. The petitioner had also sought an inquiry into the entire issue of admission and violation of laws by the colleges. She had also sought adequate compensation for damaging her academic career as well as causing mental agony and stress.
