Cops probing how Choksi avoided tag

The enquiry is underway to find who issued the status to avoid the verification.

Mumbai: The Mumbai police has begun an internal inquiry into how was a ‘no police verification required’ status was granted to fugitive daimantaire Mehul Choksi, uncle of Nirav Modi, by the Mumbai police in 2015. The status helped him get a passport in 2015 that was subsequently used to flee from India. The enquiry is underway to find who issued the status to avoid the verification.

The Mumbai police released a press release stating that the passport with number Z3396732 was issued under Tatkal category on September 10, 2015. It was valid till September 9, 2025 however was revoked on February 23, 2018.

The investigators said that after the incident came to the forefront, the police want to examine its internal process involved in the criminal antecedents verification process in a bid to improve the system.
