State government sets aside Rs 21,000 crore for municipal councils

Mumbai: On the eve of the first National Urban Development Day, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis presented awards to 37 municipal councils across the state for outstanding works in various sectors such as cleanliness and public friendly services. He also said the government is planning special schemes for municipal councils, for which Rs 21,000 crore has been set aside.

“We have given Rs 8,000 crore for 146 schemes, which were pending by last government since long. We are also planning special schemes for municipal councils for which Rs 21,000 crore has been set aside. For the first time such a huge amount is being used over municipal councils,” said Mr Fadnavis.

The CM also informed that the state government is planning for GIS (geographic information system) mapping of all properties.  “There will be a special web portal for all municipal councils of state. This collective data will be available for public. This will make all decisions very transparent,” he said.

The Union government has started celebrating National Urban Development Day to promote special schemes for all municipalities as well as municipal councils. On these lines, Maharashtra government has started giving out awards to foster competition between municipal councils.

Awards are declared for various accomplishments such as increasing and making special efforts to increase revenue, citizen-friendly services, waste segregation, sanitation drives, etc. Three Class A municipal councils, 13 Class B municipal councils and 16 Class C municipal councils won awards in these categories.
