Mumbai: With less than two months remaining for the Assembly elections in the state, the Devendra Fadnavis-led government on Tuesday decided to create additional positions to accommodate science teachers in Ashram shalas.

Those who will be recruited for the additional positions are expected to teach Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) and Zoology.  

According to an official statement, the state Cabinet has approved the creation of 111 additional positions for science teachers in government-run ashram shalas.

On the other hand, 143  positions have been created for science teachers in government-aided ashram shalas. In total, 254 new positions have been created.  

Ashram shalas are residential schools for teaching students who belong to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

There over 500 government-run ashram shalas and 556 aided ashram schools in the state. Of these, 121 government-run ashram shalas and 154 government-aided ashram shalas also cater to students pursuing higher secondary education in the arts and science streams.

The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes community constitutes over 20 per cent of the population of Maharashtra, which is likely to vote in October 2019.
