As per the proposal, “due to introduction of the goods and services tax, VAT and octroi have been abolished.

To compensate the probable loss of revenue of the state, it has become necessary to increase the rate of motor vehicle tax levied under he Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Tax act.

It was also proposed to provide that the maximum limit of the tax for all types of vehicles shall be `20 lakh which will act as an incentive to register the motor vehicles in the state and consequentially result in increase in the state revenue.”

The motor cycles and tri-cycles including those uses for a trailor or sidecar will have to pay 10 per cent, 11 per cent and 12 per cent for engine up to 99 cc, upto 299 cc and more than that respectively.

For petrol vehicles with total cost up to `10 lakh, the tax will be 11 per cent, upto `20 lakh, the tax will be 12 per cent, more than that `13 per cent.

The tax for the diesel vehicle is slightly more compared to the petrol vehicle. It is 10 per cent for vehicle of upto `10 lakh, 14 per cent for vehicle upto `20 lakh and 15 per cent for a vehicle more than `20 lakh. For CNG and LPG, it's seven per cent, eight per cent and nine per cent for vehicle upto `10 lakh, upto `20 lakh and more than `20 lakh respectively.

The current tax is 8 to 10 per cent on motor-cycles and tricycles, 9 to 11 per cent on petrol vehicles, 11 to 13 per cent on diesel vehicles and 5 to 7 per cent on CNG and LPG vehicles.

An official in the transport department said that the bill is likely to be discussed in the Assembly.

The new tax slab can be implemented as the assembly and council approves it else the government will have to issue an ordinance, he said.
