Mumbai: Major flood-prone spots in the city, including Hindmata in Parel, were hit badly as heavy rains lashed the city on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. According to civic officials, the Brihanmumbai Munic-ipal Corporation (BMC) received complaints from flooding from 21 areas, of which most are water-logging spots.

Water-logging was witnessed at Hindmata, Parel TT; Gandhi Market and Mukhyadhyapak Bhavan in Sion, Shindewadi, Bhoiwada, Parel, Kacharapatti Junction in Dharavi, and Swastik Chambers and Bunter Bhuvan in Chunabhatti.

In the eastern suburbs, areas such as Postal Colony in Chembur, Paresh Park Market in Vikhroli, Vikrant Junction-Pant Nagar and Haveli Bridge in Ghatkopar, Kalpana Chowkie in Bhandup and Ghas Compound in Saki Naka were affected by water-logging.

The western suburbs, areas such as MK Road Junction in Andheri as well as the Andheri Subway, Andheri police station, Chincholi Road in Bangur Nagar, Oberoi Mall in Dindoshi, Durganagar in Jogeshwari, also witnessed flooding.

“The BMC used dewatering pumps at 177 places in the city to discharge water from flooding spots. In addition to this, 37 pumps in six pumping stations were also used to release water,” said additional municipal commissioner Vijay Singhal.

Civic officials claimed that chronic flooding spots such as Swadeshi Mill, Mukhyadyapak Nullah in Kurla, LBS Marg and Dharavi remained relatively free from water-logging as the BMC had installed high-pressure dewatering pumps to release water from these places.

At Andheri subway, the BMC received complaints of traffic jam due to water-logging.

It was found that the flooding happened due to sand sacks, which had fallen from the railway bridge.

After removing the sacks, the water was discharged rapidly and traffic was regularised, said civic officials.
