Mumbai: The state government will finally give the job of deputy superintendent of police in Maharashtra Police to wrestler Vijay Chaudhari, after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had assured him a government job almost a year ago.

Mr Chaudhari (28) had won the Maharashtra Kesari wrestling competition for three consecutive years.

Mr Fadnavis had declared during the winter session of the Assembly in 2016 that Mr Chaudhari would be accommodated in government service.

There was a campaign on social media to attract Mr Fadnavis’s attention to his assurance to Mr Chaudhari.

By making the wrestler a deputy superintendent of police, Mr Fadnavis may have succeeded in silencing critics.

Mr Chaudhari won the prestigious ‘Maharashtra Kesari’ wrestling competition for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016.

After winning the title for the third time, Mr Chaudhari was congratulated by the state legislative houses.

Mr Fadnavis had assured on the floor of the House that Mr Chaudhari would be accommodated in government service so that his financial needs could be taken care of.

But a delay in honouring the assurance had led to criticism of Mr Fadnavis. Mr Chaudhari thanked Mr Fadnavis for the job.

“Now I can concentrate on my practice. I am thankful to Devendraji and state government also. I will ensure to uphold the respect associated with my post,” said Mr Chaudhari.
