Mumbai: Christian organisations held a morcha to the H-West office on Wednesday to protest the recent demolition of a cross at D’Monte Street in Bandra (west). Christians from all over the city joined in large numbers demanding action against civic officials who took action against the cross.

“The BMC officials acted deliberately by taking law in their own hands along with police protection and intentionally demolished the holy cross, which was erected in or about 1895, with a bulldozer,” said local resident and former corporator Nicholas Almeida.

The BMC had issued a notice to the cross on April 26. However, Christian activists said it does not apply, as the cross was constructed on a private property.

“The owner and community organisations had replied few days to the notice and even met BMC officials with documentary evidence including revenue plan and property card and explained the legal position,” said Mr Almeida.

Sharad Ughade, assistant municipal commissioner, H-West ward, said, “The BMC has issued a circular which states that any one who is interested in moving court may seek documents from the BMC.”
