Mumbai: The Mumbai police’s Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) seized 110 kg of Marijuana (ganja) worth Rs 25 lakh from Borivali, arresting a Dhule - resident who was found in its possession.

The accused, identified as Nitin Shegaonkar (23), had brought the contraband to Mumbai in his Maruti car that has also been seized by the ANC. Shegaonkar has been remanded to police custody for further investigation, officials said. The Kandivali unit of ANC received a tip off that substantial quantity of Marijuana would be smuggled into the city from western suburbs, following which they laid a trap near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali East.

The officials saw the car coming towards Borivali and intercepted it. After identifying the accused, the car was checked and the car’s boot. The contraband was found kept in smaller quantities in the rear side of the car.

“We are in the process of ascertaining the source of the seized contraband. It is suspected that the same was to be sold in smaller quantities in Mumbai,” said an ANC officer.

This is the second seizure in the New Year after the Bandra unit nabbed a big peddler of Cocaine who had been peddling in Lokhandwala area in Andheri. The accused, identified as Okoro Ogudu Onyeka, a person of African origin, was possessing 120 gram of cocaine worth Rs 6 lakh.

The accused was to peddle it in smaller quantities. Officials said that this was still a big quantity as mostly the peddlers carry quantities under 10 grams to avoid stringent sentences.
