Confusion over final year Law results of Mumbai University

As per MU guidelines, if a student is marked absent in any examination, he or she needs to produce proof of attendance from his or her exam centre.

Mumbai: Sakshi Chavan (name changed to protect identity), a final-year LLB student, is clueless after getting her results declared by Mumbai university (MU) on Thursday. She has scored an “A” grade in all subjects except one, project management, where she has failed scoring a miserable 15 out of 100 marks in the theory paper. Sakshi’s All India Bar Examination (AIBE) registration has already started since Friday and will continue only till next week.

Sakshi is not alone in her predicament. Around 80 students from Government Law College (GLC), Churchgate, have been marked “A”, which means absent, and they are clueless about what went wrong. One of these students said, “On the day of my examination, I went to give my exam and yet, my result shows absent. How can that happen? It is either a system error again or somebody out there is enjoying playing with the lives of students.”

Asked about the matter on an earlier occasion, acting controller of examination (CoE) Arjun Ghatule told The Asian Age, “If students’ result shows ‘A’ mark, it means it has been withheld or put on reserve. Nowhere does it mean that the student has flunked the exam or has been disqualified. This is nothing to be worried about. We will soon declare the results of such students.”

As per MU guidelines, if a student is marked absent in any examination, he or she needs to produce proof of attendance from his or her exam centre.

However, the varsity on Thursday issued a notification clarifying that students marked absent need not prove their attendance.

Meanwhile, students’ groups are planning to meet the new acting vice-chancellor Devanand Shinde and Ghatule to discuss the matter.

Sachin Pawar, a law student, said, “We are going to ask the VC to form a committee and keep constant check on results. This is not just the result, it is our entire future.” Pawar said that this year, most students had failed in the subject, evidence, so much so, he suspected foul play behind it.
