Mumbai: The Sangli Police registered a gang-rape case after eight men raped an eight months’ pregnant woman on Wednesday. The preliminary probe in the incident revealed that the main accused and the couple were allegedly embroiled in a monetary dispute. The incident took place at Turchi Phata area where the couple had been to meet the accused pertaining to work.

The Maharashtra Women’s Commission has shot a letter to the Sangli police, seeking details of the action taken, following the gruesome incident. The police said that the accused were identified as Mukund Mane, Javed Khan, Vinod, Sagar and four of their accomplices who raped the woman, by taking turns, over the alleged monetary dispute. Police investigators said that the key accused, Mane, knew the couple as he had previously worked at their hotel for long time as a cook.

“The couple was looking for another couple to work in their eatery and had spread the word. Mane was one of those who were asked to look for a couple. He info-
rmed the victim's husband about having found a couple for the work and asked the couple to meet at Turchi Phata,” said Ajay Sindhkar, inspector of Tasgaon police station. The accused then allegedly assaulted the couple and hurled abuses at them and later gagged and tied the victim's husband and bundled him inside a vehicle.

The accused then took the woman to a room nearby and sexually assaulted the woman turn by turn. The couple was then asked to leave after being threatened not to reveal this to anybody and to avoid complaining the police.

The gang also robbed the victim of her mangalsutra, gold chain and cash that they were carrying. "We have identified the accused and are in the process of apprehending them. The identity of the remaining accused and motive is being probed further," added Sindhkar.

The women's commission has also sought for official report from Sangli police on the incident. A letter written by Vijaya Rahatkar to the Sangli police chief sought for the details of the incident, case registered and action initiated by the police in the gang-rape.

A case of rape, criminal intimidation, assault, forceful confinement and robbery, as per sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against all accused and further probe is underway.
