Mumbai: NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Congress state unit president Ashok Chavan on Sunday demanded the suspension of IAS officer Nidhi Chaudhary after the latter demanded the rem-oval of Mahatma Gandhi’s image from currency notes.

Mr Pawar, in a letter to the CM,  demanded stern action against her to prevent such utterances from being made again.

Mr Chavan said that no one could rule out important role of played by him during the freedom struggle. “There have been repeated attempts to erase the principles of Gandhi and insult him but none have succeeded in it,” he said.

He added that the government action against Ms Chaudhary would decide if the government were with Gandhi or Godse.

The Asian Age tried contacting Ms Chaudhary but received no response. Ms Chaudhary, landed in a controversy after posting a tweet allegedly deriding Gandhi and glorifying Godse.  Later, on May 31, she tweeted, “I have deleted my tweet of July 17 with regards to Gandhiji, because some people misunderstood it. If only they had followed my timeline since 2011 they would've understood that I would never even dream of insulting Gandhiji.”
