Mumbai: A man working as a peon in a company allegedly killed a three-month-old kitten in Santacruz. The kitten was smashed against a wall and thrashed with a bamboo stick until she bled to death. Following this incident, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote a letter to Mumbai’s commissioner of police, calling for the perpetrator to be punished under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and to undergo psychiatric evaluation and counselling.

Yuvraj Bhavsar, who works in an office in Santacruz, owned the kitten. He filed an FIR at Santacruz police station and wrote a letter to accused Manoj Angane’s employer, requesting them to terminate his employment if found guilty.

The accused can be booked under section 429 of the IPC (mischief by killing or maiming cattle or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) and section 11(1)(a) (torture or otherwise treats any animal so as to subject it to unnecessary pain or suffering).

Mr Bhavsar said that he has been feeding cats for around two years and two of his cats have mysteriously died in last a year. “I was not able to view the CCTV footage in any of the cases. But in this case, the CCTV footage shows how brutally he killed the kitten. When confronted, the accused Manoj Angane, who works in my neighbouring office, couldn’t explain his action and accepted his crime.”

“This kitten died a painful death. Brutal cases like this one are becoming a common phenomenon. We want the accused to be punished” said PETA Emergency Response Coordinator Meet Ashar.
