Mumbai: Kalyan youth Areeb Majeed who has been arrested for travelling to Iraq and Syria to join ISIS has sought interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding scheduled next month.

Majeed, who has not engaged any lawyer to conduct the trial and defending himself in the court, argued before the court that he is ready to pay the charges of escort while being taken to attend his sister’s wedding scheduled in the first week of February. He has requested the court to grant him two days interim bail so that he could attend the marriage.

The lawyers representing the National Investigating Agency on the other hand has opposed the plea saying that Majeed is facing serious charges of travelling abroad to participate in fight for ISIL. The prosecution has also expressed apprehension that if released on bail he may tamper with evidence.

Apart from seeking temporary bail Majeed has also requested the court to issue directions to concerned authorities to produce his call data record before his arrest and also reports of his medical examinations while he was in police custody.

After hearing arguments on all pleas special NIA judge S.M. Bhosale reserved order on Majeed’s plea till next week.

According to police, Majeed along with three of his friends, all engineering students, flew to Baghdad on May 23, 2014, as a part of a group of 22 pilgrims to visit religious shrines in Iraq. Upon returning to India, other pilgrims told police that Majeed, Fahad Shaikh, Aman Tandel and Shaheen Tanki had gone to Fallujah.

Later, on November 28, 2014, the security agencies claimed to have arrested Majeed in Mumbai.
