Alert traffic cop saves three-year-old child from being raped

Mumbai: A rickshaw driver from Govandi who allegedly kidnapped a three-year-old girl on Friday night was arrested after an alert traffic constable questioned him. The accused, Arshad Asif Rehman Shaikh (28) is a resident of Mankhurd.

A police officer said, “On Friday he went to Govandi to drop some customer. He was then waiting for some other passenger around 10:30 pm. While interrogating him he told us that he saw the girl playing on the road outside her house when stopped his rickshaw, took her with him and fled the spot. We are still interrogating him to find the reason behind kidnapping her.”

Senior police inspector B. Dhole said, of the Shivaji Nagar police station said, “The accused was taking her to his house. Traffic police officer Sachin Anand was deployed at Lotus Junction signal and the rickshaw halted at the signal. He saw the girl crying and therefore he stopped Arshad. He simultaneously called us. We reached the spot, rescued the girl and arrested the accused.”

Mr Anand said, “ I saw the rickshaw driver holding the girl near his seat and was shouting at her. The girl was crying so much. I just stopped him and asked whose girl this is, why are you beating her? He tried to avoid me and tried starting the rickshaw to flee from the spot. I held his collar to stop him and called my colleague and informed the police station.” Luckily the girl got rescued from his custody.”
