Mumbai: The MIDC police in Andheri booked a businessman based on CCTV camera footage showing him hitting a girl in his speeding vehicle Sunday night. The police learned that the accident took place after the tyre of the senior citizen’s vehicle burst and the girl was flung in the air after the car hit her.

The accused was identified with the help of his car’s registration number as businessman Vishwajeet Hate (65); he was allegedly not under the influence of alcohol. The officials said that the incident took place on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) at around 4.30 pm.

The victim was identified as Sayali Rane (24), who was on her way home from college. The officials said that when Rane was crossing from the corner of JVLR, Hate’s Toyota came speeding and he lost control after one of the tyres burst near the Durga Nagar junction.

“The accident took place on the Jogeshwari-bound lane of JVLR. The vehicle then went and rammed into a pole and jumped over a footpath and came to a screeching halt,” said an officer of MIDC police station.

Soon after the accident, passers-by rushed Rane to a nearby hospital in critical condition where she is undergoing treatment.

While the preliminary probe has hinted at a tyre burst, the police has refe-rred the car for inspection by Regional Transport Officials (RTO) who will verify if it went into a tizzy as per the police’s findings. The police has registered a case against Hate as per relevant sections of the IPC.
