Mumbai: While the intensity of rains in Mumbai is likely to reduce from heavy to moderate, areas like Ratnagiri, Vidarbha, Marathwada will see heavy rainfall from Tuesday. This is expected to come as a relief to these drought-hit areas.

On Sunday, Colaba observatory recorded 15.8 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz observatory recorded 9.2 mm rain between 8 am and 6 pm.

The city area recorded highest (20.16 mm) rainfall during this period.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that Konkan region of Maharashtra recorded good rainfall in June. “Almost entire Konkan received normal rainfall. Most parts of Madhya Maharashtra received normal rainfall except Nadurbar, Nashik, Sangli. Marathwada and Vidarbha regions are below normal. This region is expected to get active monsoon in the coming week,” said K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director general of meteorology, IMD.

According to a private weather forecasting agency, Skymet Weather, Vidarbha will experience moderate rains during the next 24 hours due to the low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal. Thereafter, rainfall activities would increase even more as the above system would start moving west/north-westwards. As such Gondia, Nagpur, Bhandara, Yavatmal, Akola, Amravati and Parbhani is expected to witness heavy rains.

Along with Vidarbha, Marathwada and the other northwestern parts of Maharashtra will receive moderate rain accompanied with thundershowers for the next few days.
