Family of 4 hurt in gas leak fire

Mumbai: Four members of a family were injured in a fire that broke out after gas leakage from an LPG cylinder at their home in Thane district on Sunday, an official said. The incident occurred around 8 am at a house located in Shivaji Nagar area of Kalwa town, Thane.

An official from Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of Thane Municipal Corporation informed that they received a call about fire at the house of Raghunath Patil near Datta mandir, New Shivaji Nagar, Kalwa (east) and was attended with a fire engine.

Santosh Kadam, officer from RDMC, TMC said, “Gas leakage triggered the fire, injuring four family members. The victims are identified as Raghunath Patil (55), his wife Sampada Patil (50), daughter Rohini (25) and son Rohan Raghunath Patil (22).”

The fire brigade successfully doused the fire and moved the four victims to Thane for further treatment.

“The Patils are recuperating at civic-run Thane Civil Hospital. While Mr Raghunath has sustained around 65 per cent burn injury, his wife Sampada suffered one to two per cent, daughter Rohini has received around seven to ten per cent and son Rohan has received around five to seven per cent burn injuries,” he informed

According to reports, there has been a 10 per cent rise in the total number of fire-related calls to the fire brigade in 2018-2019 compared to the previous fiscal year. Many incidents of the blaze were reported this year. The fire officials have checked at least 6,396 building from 2015 to May 2019 and issued notices to 3,113 buildings.

On June 22, sixteen residents of Wadala high-rise, including a 13-day-old infant, suffered from suffocation and were shifted to hospital after a fire erupted in a 21-storey building.

In another incident on May 23, two senior citizens died due to suffocation and 11 others were injured after a fire engulfed in Punjab Mahal building in Bhendi Bazar.
