Journalist assaulted in Kharghar

Mumbai: Four persons at Kharghar allegedly attacked a journalist Sudhir Suryawanshi and his friend Santosh Khatate on Friday noon. According to the police, the assailants had punctured the tyres of the car owned by Santosh Khatate and allegedly assaulted them with hockey sticks. Following the attack, the unidentified assailants fled the spot on their motorbikes. The Kharghar police has registered a case of assault against the four unidentified men. The duo is admitted in Kharghar’s Medicity Hospital for treatment.

According to the police sources attached to the Kharghar police station, Sudhir Suryawanshi, a journalist working for an English daily DNA and his friend, Santosh Khatate, both residents of the same residential complex in Panvel, had gone to Kharghar for a personal work.

When they were on their way back to their vehicle, they saw that four men, who had covered their face with a handkerchief, punctured the tyres of the car and then allegedly attacked Mr Suryawanshi and Mr Khatate with hockey sticks.

After the attack the four unidentified men fled on their motorbikes and left the victim duo in pain. The duo was immediately rushed to Medicity Hospital in Kharghar for treatment. The victim duo sustained injuries on their hand. The Navi Mumbai Kharghar police has registered an First Information Report (FIR) against the four unidentified persons for attacking and assaulting Mr Suryawanshi and Mr Khatate.

Speaking to The Asian Age, Hemant Nagrale, commissioner of Navi Mumbai police, said, “The two victims are now stable and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kharghar. The victims suspect that the motive behind the attack was their society’s elections issue that took place a month ago.”

The Kharghar police has booked four persons over the incident.
